The Beginners Guide to Spiritual Cleansing

When I entered the spiritual world the importance of cleansing wasn’t explained to me, and I never gave it a thought. I was just going through life with heavy spirits attached to me, negative energy from people I’d been around and places I’d been. Giving readings and allowing their energies to linger. Imagine carrying the weight of 20 different people with 20 different bags. No wonder I was drained and moody af.

What is spiritual cleansing?

Purifying. Removing negative and harmful energies, entities and spirits from your body and energy field.

How do I smoke cleanse without sage?

  • Mugwort
  • Dragon's Blood
  • Eucalyptus
  • Rosemary

“You don’t understand that you’re an empath,” my good sis Latoya checked me one day in a reading. I feel everything and I am an easy source of light for beings to attach themselves to. I needed a consistent routine. My spiritual hygiene was (and is) just as important as my physical. So,I started doing research and asking questions until I came up with a system that worked for me.

Conjuress Clark has been a great friend and guide in my Hoodoo path. My first deep cleansing was a 13-day sea-salt water bath recommended by her, and it changed my life. I started 13 days leading up to my birthday and the goal was to rid myself of everything that didn’t belong. After my bath, each night I would dress myself in white (to keep other energies from attaching or reattaching) and sleep peacefully in my white sheets.  It was a much-needed reset, and it might be time for another!

You've got to follow her for all the details but it is worth it! She shares tons of knowledge and her oils are on point!

Afterwards, it took me awhile before I started consistently cleansing. But through conversations with the beautiful tribe that I’ve been blessed with, books and other forms of research–I’ve developed a routine that works for me! Keep reading for a few of my go-to methods!

Fresh or dried this herb is one of the GOATS! Its versatility allows uses for cleansing, protection, divination and psychic work! I love to simmer it and let the aroma fill my home. Windows and doors open of course, the bad energy needs somewhere to go!

If you can’t get your hands on the loose herb – a good mugwort bundle does the job! Similar to a sage bundle, light it over a fireproof bowl or an abalone shell and walk through your house, letting the smoke touch and cleanse every bit that it can!  Recite the Lord’s Prayer or any cleansing prayer of your choice. Express gratitude. Open the windows and let it work.

Warning: DO YOUR RESEARCH & CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN. Working with herbs is a beautiful experience. However, everything ain’t for everybody. Mugwort and pregnant women do not match. I highly suggest you do extensive research before working with any herbs or oils. All the info you need is a google search a way!

Resin and Incense Burning

Burning resins and incense is one of my favorite methods because it’s relatively inexpensive and easy. I advise to burn your resins, powdered incense, cleansing herbs or camphor tablets in a fire safe bowl or coal burner on top of a charcoal disc (also a cleansing mechanism).

In addition to cleansing, camphor tablets are perfect for easing anxiety and promoting relaxation. They are known to relax your muscles and clear your airways. A perfect way to settle down and release the worries of the day.

General incense you can carry while you’re on the go. Sometimes we run into unexpected issues or rude ass people. The aroma of frankincense, peppermint, eucalyptus, sandalwood and many others will bring you back to a state of peace! Let the smoke surround you and affirm yourself. I am cleansed. I am healed. I am free from______.

I also use this method to cleanse my tarot and oracle cards.

Florida Water

Not actual water from Florida but that would work too! This alcohol-based cologne is a staple in my household. The hints of citrus and lavender boosts your spirits and dispels negative energy. I pour a bit in my washing machine prior to washing my clothes, cleanse my tools with it, wipe down the counters and entryways, and spray myself daily. It is my go-to when I have back-to-back readings and I need to clear my space.

And the soap!!! First, I wash with an unscented, white or nearly white bar of soap (it’s all natural) then I follow up with the Florida Water bar soap. It is light and not harsh on the skin, but I recommend testing a small area before you get comfortable!

The Ocean

I am fortunate enough to live less than 20 minutes from two beaches. The ocean water is filled with cleansing and healing properties. The salt and the spirits of our ancestors provide me a peace that I cannot explain.  I like to give an offering to express my gratitude. Burning ancestor money in the sand, leaving crystals or coins, your intuition will tell you. Just keep it respectful and don’t leave anything that will cause harm.

There are so many options that we will explore soon. From candle work to baths and more! Do you any of these methods resonate with you? What are your go-to methods? Shoot me message or join our Instagram conversation on cleansing this week! Next week...PROTECTION!
